Manhole Cover Student Design Contest

The Spokane Arts Commission and the City of Spokane Wastewater Management is announcing a search for student-designed manhole covers to be placed throughout the City of Spokane. The manhole covers selected will be cast and used at the start of the 2010 summer.
The projects intent is to enhance the visual appearance of the City of Spokane manhole covers. While all designs should be visually appealing to all ages, they should also be reflective of the City of Spokane and communicate a sense of place. Designs may reflect the environment, nature, water, water qualities or landscape of the Pacific Northwest.
Along with selecting the appropriate design for the manhole the contestants must be citizens of the City of Spokane and the age of 18 or under. All student artists must also submit their works according to criteria, which can be found on the Spokane Arts Commission website, www.spokanearts.org/hottopics.aspx. The designs will be evaluated by members of the staff of Wastewater Management, Spokane Arts Commission, and community representatives.
The selected artist(s) will receive $100 and their design on manhole covers throughout the City of Spokane for up to 50 years.
Students interested in submitting a design are invited to download a prospectus at www.spokanearts.org/hottopics.aspx. All submissions should be sent to Manhole Cover Art Contest, Attn: Gary Kaesemeyer, City of Spokane, 909 E. Sprague Avenue, Spokane, WA 99202. Deadline is Friday, April 30th, 2010 at 3 p.m. PST.

My utility bill arrived for March, and it had a flier about this event in it. I hope a lot of kids enter, and I’m looking forward to seeing beautiful manhole covers on the sidewalks!
One of the things I loved about Tokyo is that the manhole covers are very distinct and beautiful. They have a cherry blossom design that is not only beautiful, but it really makes you think “Oh yes, I’m in Tokyo!” every time you see one. Now I regret that I didn’t take a photo of one!
